It looks too engineered and not artsy. The cog one looked better. So it's probably better to use the new one where looks are not important or the view is a bit obstructed. Also I have some concerns about the spring. I think It could be redesigned so that it's completely gone or the its resting position matches the resting position of a gate

Hi Martin, you might consider throwing all your marbles in a polishing tumbler at some point. I noticed tiny rust deposits on them. Those little specks could build up over time and cause a lot of issues later. Also, polishing the marbles could help with the smoothness you talked about. Avoid water, but hopefully you agree

Ooh, another thing about gates. What about accent? Can I do that? COULD it so that? By accent I mean modulating the power/volume/hardness of each, say, snare hit. But it's gravity powered so the only thing I can't think of is launching double marbles at it during one tick.

One thing that I noticed in these gates. They have a returns spring, which will limit their maximum frequency. They also have a long rod actuator. You know what also has these attributes? Push-rod engines. Also timing and frequency limited, there's a reason we don't put push rod valves in engines anymore, we use overhead cams. Now chain driven cams to activate the gates is a stupid idea. But I keep thinking, what could I improve on this gates to increase timing accuracy and max frequency? Active close is all I can think off for the gates, rather than a spring tank storing and reversing ke. Can't think of a solution though.... 🤣 I keep thinking of peak frequency for drum rolls.

Little by little the charm of the original concept is being lost through re-engineering and efficiency. Don't get me wrong, I'm still onboard however I kinda miss the days of the plywood components and rubber bands. Eventually Martin is going to discover microprocessors and then it will just be a giant DAW.

For best redundancy, you should avoid using any springs. If you can use gate that only requires gravity, it would be the better option.

With the pinball one you don't even need the extension arm catch delay if done right as the pinball one only drops 1 per trigger.

I wonder if there's a way to do with the marble gate like one did with the music box machine- have an aesthetic piece that turns as a marble falls through without putting further stress on the gate? Best of both worlds if that's doable- plus it'd be a nice nod to other circular parts of the machine as well as the music box too

Try this with the sliders put the delrin I'm sure my phone didn't spell that right, on the back side of the metal guides this way you'll have dapped contact but it will be dampened so you won't get the metal on metal sound, or build a marble gate taking in consideration the width of the delrin and slide delrin over the rods and now you have it very dampened but to be honest with you I don't think that's a good idea imagining it in my head I think having a piece or maybe a oggard piece slid on opposite sides of the rails and you still have metal to metal contact and you've not had to make any modifications to the gates width. Note. The delrin is probably just a slick as the metal is just as long as it's polished.

To be honest I think that the clock mechanism is a lot more aesthetically pleasing and nicer on the eyes as it is made mostly from plywood, and I can imaging a long line of them at the end of the project (whenever that may be) all working on the vibraphone. That would be super satisfying!! And would you also have to replace all of the strings on this design after a while?

I love the Marble Machine and Martin, but I'm going to check out for a bit. I get so frustrated when a video starts with "I'm going to throw away everything I've designed up to this point and start again..." I know it's part of the process, but I can't help just feeling angry with him. I feel now I'd just rather wait and see what the end product is. Am I too impatient?

Martin, i want to see you implement and utilize a electronics more in your machine, like optical/mechanical sensors and servo or solenoid to actuate gates for the marbles. It won't even have to be digital control, analog controls should be enough. It sure looks good though...

You can get rid of the spring if you counterweight the piece pivoting on the M3. And that counterweight is a really cool anchorage point for your kinetic fingers.

Simplicity of design is a wonderful thing. I've watched you from the start and saw you making decisions based on art over engineering. You can blend the two but a highly mechanical device such as this must address mechanical principles first. In every machine design process, sooner or later you have to say, "Good enough!" I feel like you are rapidly approaching that point. There is no perfection in mechanical design, but there can be Good Enough.

Come to think of it, the audience will not be able to see the clockwork designs in action because they are so little and move so little. So, they are only showy to you. Just like all the other parts of the MMX (which is why you wanted to include the Kinetic Fingers to begin with). So, functionally, they are perfectly sound, but as a showpiece, you might as well put the newest type of gates with the simplest design on all nineteen sentinels.

The only difference between pinball gate and your original wood one is that new gate rotates & old one translates. You have advantage of the leverage, but does the programming wheel have a long enough motion to activate that lever? New gate has closer clearances and may be more prone to jam or let marbles through when it shouldn't.

im imagining only 1 edge case this style going to fail...its when a marble drops quite hard from the marble divider into empty marble lane and at specific time the pacman opens a little bit.

I think the introduction of other moving parts is the charm of the Marble Machine. this takes a bit of life away from the machine but it is undeniably a better simpler mechanical solution. I agree on your take where you use the minimalist for when space is tight (or hard to see). I also think that some "rattle" would be more beneficial to the machine, for the similar reasons. What I loved about the original machine is how it rattled, as it it was "breathing". Though how the rattle of the marbles with the metal is known best by you, as I assume you have more "intimate" time with the machine than any on us here on the interwebs.

Just a tip from things I have learned in designing things myself. Sometimes it's easier to research things in industry that work. If you get burned out trying to make a solution, turn your attention to thinking of where the thing you are trying to design could have been used or is being used. The pinball gate is a perfect example of this. Can't wait to see what you come up with and the final marble machine

at this point i am unfortunately convinced that martin will never finish the marble machine. he is a youtuber now, and his main source of income will dramatically decrease once the marble machine is finished, and he knows it. thats why he has endlessly reworked things that were already finished for most of the last year. this will be strung out until the end of time because its no longer even about the marble machine.

1. with this new design of a marble gate you have to be absolutely sure that you always have marbles in the lane or it could catch a marble and damage something 2. the sound from the encampment gate can be minimized by changing the design of the gear and escapement arms(all you have to do is make sure that the gear cant move unless it is touching one of the escapement arms) [this is the main reason humans have spent 5+ centuries redesigning the escapement mechanism]

Pinball gate is brilliant! Like you, I would miss the industrial automation look the clockwork mechanism brings though. It's a pity I won't be alive when your offspring finally realize their father's dream and actually finish the marble machine. I would liked to have seen it.

Now that looks simple and functional. Love the new gates. The design can also allow exactly the right amount of balls to be "cued up" in order to build up more than one ball to produce just the right amount of force where and when you need it. It may also help to control the feeder rails where the balls are reintroduced into the gates...niccceee! I think you are on your way to 0 misses and 100% accuracy!

Hey I love your channel B I think you're extremely talented C I think you're missing an opportunity perhaps you should publish a book of the designs people submitted. If you got that many designs I'm sure there's a hundred and fifty or so that would make a very interesting book of design as it relates to your Channel. Perhaps you might even do something online with a competition to narrow it down to a top ten. Just my thoughts on this topic.
